How to put together a social media content calendar

If you’re reading this, you probably read our last blog How important is having a social media content calendar? (but if you haven’t yet – go check it out!). A social media content calendar is great for organisation, helping you take stock of what you’ve published and when, and helping you gain a better perspective of your overall brand and/or marketing strategy. Plus – content calendars help you work more efficiently – saving you a lot of time in the long-run.

But how do you go about putting a content calendar together? And what do they even look like? While there’s no one way to put together a social media content calendar, there are a few elements which are crucial to making them a success – and we’ve detailed those below. We’ve also included some of our favourite social media schedulers which also serve as content calendars, so you can streamline your processes and drive engagement on your chosen social media platforms.

What a social media content calendar looks like

A content calendar doesn’t have to look a particular way – it just needs to showcase whatever the image / video is that you want to post, the caption to go with it, and the date. Like so:

DateCaptionImage / video
DD/MM/YYYYLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

If you want to add more detail, you could even categorise your content by subjects. For example, if you owned hair salon, there could a number of subjects you want to cover for adding variation in your content – like, product/merchandise posts, colour correction posts, hair styling posts, client appreciation posts, get to know the hairdressers posts. To make sure you’re getting an even spread of these different subjects or categories, and good variation in content, you could display this in your content calendar, like so:

DateSubject / CategoryCaptionImage / video
DD/MM/YYYYCATEGORY ALorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
DD/MM/YYYYCATEGORY BLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
DD/MM/YYYYCATEGORY CLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

You don’t need anything fancy or costly to plan your social media content – you can do this on anything, from a notebook or a Word document. However, if you were looking to streamline your content creation and scheduling processes, you should consider using a social media scheduler.

Social media content schedulers

There are a number of schedulers out there – some you might have heard of before, like Hootsuite, Sprout Social or Loomly. Paying for a subscription to some of these schedulers may not be within your budget – however, there are alternative schedulers like Later. Later has a free plan for brands or individuals to schedule their social content, but they also offer paid subscriptions which come with useful features, like post analytics and hasthtag suggestions.

If you’ve attempted a social media calendar without success in the past, or haven’t had the time to put one together, it’s time to reconsider. The time and effort you put into creating one will pay dividends in the long-run.
